Jury
All orchestra students will have a jury as the semester exam
for orchestra class. A jury is an audition where a student
plays in front of a panel of judges who assess the student’s
ability and performance. Students must strive for one of
the following certification categories:
1. Proficient player
2. Commendable player
3. Distinguished player
4. Accomplished player
1. Proficient player
Student must perform a full page from an etude book that
will be chosen by the student and the director. The etude
should be agreed upon by November. The specific date
will be announced.
2. Commendable player
Student must perform one page from a state-approved concerto
(or a concerto agreed upon by the director). The list of
state-approved concerti is attached.
3. Distinguished player
Student must perform an entire movement from the
state-approved concerto. Also, the student must perform
three excerpts from the orchestra repertoire that is chosen
by the director.
4. Accomplished player
Student must prepare two full sonatas or concerti of
contrasting style from different musical periods. The
student must perform three excerpts from the orchestra
repertoire that is chosen by the director. The student must
also present in manuscript, and perform, an original
composition.
All of these categories include scales and sight reading.
Please refer to the jury
requirements sheets to see what is required for each
category.
In
order to qualify for a certification category, the student
must pass the jury with at least a grade of 90. Students
not passing will strive for the category at the next jury.
Students not able to pass the Proficient category by
the end of the school year will be placed on a performance
contract. Freshmen will strive for the proficient
category in the first semester.
Students who reach the accomplished player status
must continue to achieve that status while enrolled at SOA.
Seniors who wish to pursue
a Senior Thesis Diploma must reach the
distinguished category prior to his/her senior year.
